I bought the Dash without a plan so the phone is officially mine, and bought those minutes cards. I read on the manual that if you use the EDGE feature, you will get billed extra, but since I don't have a plan I can't get billed, so is that free? I tried it and got on-line fine, then I checked my minutes and I still had them all, does that mean it's free for me but not for people with service plans? Or will it eventually take minutes off my card?

I'd be very surprised if they offered it for free. Maybe your prepay card has so many minutes and so many bytes of data and you have paid using the bytes bucket
