We have alot of wood and I'm thinking that if we sell a couple of cords (including hauling and stacking) in the winter time, it'll pay for the extra heat for a couple of months.

Also, If you feel like addressing it - what are some examples of hard woods and soft woods

thanks

Hardwoods are generally characterized as being deciduous type trees that lose their leaves every year. They burn slower, provide more heat, and make better firewood than softwoods. Examples include oak, hickory, ash, and poplar.

Softwoods are usually characterized as being conifer type trees and retain their leaves (otherwise known as needles) year round. As a general rule, they make poor firewood and most people won't buy it. They burn quickly, pop and spit as they burn, and the chemicals released in burning quickly cause a buildup of flammible material in the chimney flue. Examples include white pine, southern yellow pine, and the western firs.

As to the value of your firewood, much depends on your location. Best advice is to look in your local newspaper classified ads for others that may be selling firewood. It is a competitive business, and all of the prices will be similar. You should price your wood the same as your competition if you expect to sell it in a timely manner.

Good luck with selling your firewood.
