You must be a Criminal Justice major. Anyway, I can help you out on this.

Here is the skinny on the organized crime. It is simply a criminal organization which conducts crime, controls crime, and generally operates much like a business. It has a command structure and unlike associated thugs or gangs the only crimes organized criminals perform are those for which they stand to gain monetary from.

For example, they organize a hit on a local cop who is close to arresting them. The gain is they don't go to jail and loss money. Gangs on the other hand may rob, steal , or vandalize but the gain is very small and only temporary.

Additionally, crimes are usually a source of business for the organized criminal. They sell prostitution and control entire rings of operations, they may facilitate and sell human slaves, they may sell hits on individuals, and they sell, distribute, and traffic major amounts of illegal drugs. Once again, associated thugs simply run the streets and generally pray upon crimes of cercumstance or oppertunity while organized crime makes the crime available.

Organized crime generally works from the top down just like a business. The main boss is like the CEO. Then you have Leutenants, and so on down to the guy on the street. The crimes are thought out and planed in the upper levels of the organization but carried out by the lower level people with some middle level person to over see its success. All in all, it is just like a business.

Lastly, these crimes interact with legitmate practises and good people all the time. Have you ever heard of a big business executive coming into town to "see how things are going" and from there he/she is winned and dinned then sent to a fancy hotel were a prostitute (call-girl) meets them for services? Yea, it happens everyday.

All so, everyday good people get caught up in it since most organized crimes have a cover business. Some of the most famous have been pizza shops, flower services, retailers, political functions, and of course medical practices. In order to do this, the organized criminal hires good people to work for them so that they seem legitamite. Also these organized criminals generally are very religious which builds they're character and allows for a degree of money laundering since no one knows how much anyone else puts into the offering plates.

Hope this helps.
