I really need help. I'm currently a freshman elementary ed major at a university in PA and I'm pretty unhappy. I figured out a few months ago that I would just rather commute to school instead of living there. My dad wasn't entirely thrilled when I told him this and now he's started to ignore the issue, so basically the move is up to me. My uncle, who lives and works in DE offered for me to come live with him and go to school down there. He lives about 10 mins away from U of DE, which would be perfect. In order to really cut costs, I would go to Del Tech for a year and then U of DE, so that I get in-state. The big problem here is that I have no license or car. There is a good chance that I could get these this summer and be all set. My dad is really set on me going back to school in PA, but mentally, I don't think I can handle it for 3 more years. I know that if I don't make this decision now, I won't have this chance again and I have about one week to decide. HELP

When transferring, it is less of hindrance if you do it early in your college career; you are less likely to lose important credits. Like you said, leaving PA is up to you; but I would recommend doing what makes you happy.

I think it would be a good idea to transfer if you know for sure that you will be happier at U of DE. It would be a big waste if you spend one year at Tech, just to go to school that you think you will be happier at, and find out that there is no improvement. Also how do you know if you will get accepted to U of DE?

Overall, we go to college to learn so the educational quality is the most important. However, it's hard to do well if you are not happy. You should make a list of what makes you unhappy and see if the problem pertains just to the school in PA or if there is a possibility that they will still exist in DE.

So you know I transferred colleges after my sophomore year and survived.

You might also ask yourself if there's something about that particular college that troubles you, or if its something about college in general that you're having a hard time with. If its the later than jumping ship may not be the best thing to do, but if its the former its probably a good idea (with apologies if you've already been over this a million times in your own head.)

These things do tend to work themselves out in the end. Good luck.
