There's several methods to try. Pick the one that suits your needs the best.
Really quick fix: try taking his temperature rectally. This will often stimulate him to go. Alternatively, you can buy glycerine suppositories at the pharmacy. Those will stimulate him to go, and smooth the way a little.
Sort of quick fix for chronic: when you run him a warm bath, put two ounces of baking soda in the tub. Let him splash and play for a while. The baking soda in the water will help him relax and go. This is more helpful in older kids, because they tend to hold it if they have one hard one, because they're scared.
Not so quick fix for the long term: He can have some juice - apple, prune, cherry, pear, or grape - a few ounces up to twice a day. More whole-grain foods too - graham crackers, bran muffins, whole grain breads, etc. Veggies and fruits. But, applesauce, cooked carrots, and milk products like yogurt, ice cream, and cheese can make constipation worse, so be aware of those.

A few things,
milk can cause constipation if the child is lactose intolerant.
Iron can cause constipation (that was my sons problem) try a formula with less iron and avoid things like infant rice cereal in which iron is synthetic and not usually absorbed well by infants
and lack of water can cause constipation.
Start by giving your baby a glass of water every day (or a bottle) 6-8 ounces. make sure he's drinking that. Even if its a problem such as iron or fiber water will help!
Then, if you are already started solids go with the old fashioned, healthy alternatives. Prune juice (so healthy), oatmeal (whole oats not the instant packet stuff), bananas, pears, baked beans, lentils, and there is even a apple juice in grocery stores now that is a fiber drink.
If its really bad there is an over the counter stool softener for infants called little tummies I do believe.

I use apple juice halfed with water I have always used it and I have 3 kids now. We don't have a problem with it. I also tried white corn syrup with water (warm) and it works just as good but if it is a continuous problem I would go to the dr and find out if he doesn't have bm problems that could be serious enough for meds. Good Luck and God Bless the little one.

Honestly, for my son, it's cantaloupes. Everyone told me to use prunes and prune juice, but he wouldn't touch it. His grandmother told me to give him cantaloupe (or in your case, pureed cantaloupe), and believe it or not, it worked! Now he eats cantaloupe about twice a week, just to avoid constipation (it's a continuous problem for him). But don't forget this is only a temporary fix. If your sons getting constipated regularly, talk to your doctor about it so she can check him for any tummy problems or vitamin deficiency's he may have.

heya my son (19months) gets chronic constipation, and has currently been constipated for the past three weeks (we're on meds tho now lol), usually we use either prune juice or pureed kiwifruit and prunes, and pawpaw/papaya is good too.. you can make that into an iceblock too.. you could also try a teaspoon of brown sugar in half a bottle of boiled water, that's a good one too.. be wary of apple juice as it actually tends to have more of a constipating effect!

Prune juice.. Mix it with apple juice to cut the flavor..
You can also give him dried prunes
Prune act as a natural laxative and should get him going again, be prepared for some rather loose stools with the prunes..

Prune juice always worked for my little girl. Gerber even makes the little 4oz. bottles of Apple Prune juice. Even Apple juice should work as it has a laxative effect....steer clear of apples though as they do the opposite and will pent your son up more. I don't know why that is.
If all else fails, try one tablespoon of clear Karo syrup....the stuff for pancakes and waffles. I've never tried it, but I hear it works like a charm!

1) Increase water consumption.
2) White grape juice with 1 teaspoon of white corn syrup (no honey).
3) Increase the amount of whole grains in the diet as well as fruits.
4) Warm prune juice -- may add small amount of sugar for taste.

I agree that this is an issue to take to your pediatrician.
Whatever you choose, do not give your child Karo syrup. As with honey, there is a risk of botulism transmission with corn syrup for a child so young.
