Filipinas are common to be seen working in nightclubs in Japan or as maids in Japanese households. In fact, Filipinos cover of a significant portion of population in Japan. Some even marry Japanese men for money more than for "love." I don't look down on my fellow Filipinas as I even have an aunt who was an entertainer in Japan herself. I am a Filipina (who lives in America) and I plan to study in Japan for a year... the thing is, I want to know how the Japanese see my people. Are Filipinas looked down upon in the Japanese society? Let's say I date a Japanese guy, will the guy's family not approve because I am Filipina?

This question is by no means intended to offend the Japanese or Filipinos -- just a question by a curious person.

Thank you.

I'm a Japanese man in Tokyo. Frankly, Japanese people do not respect Filipinas so much as they do to the fellow Japanese or Western people. By any means, I'm not talking about my own attitude to Filipinas. I'm talking about general value in the Japanese society.

The reason is, as you said, many Filipinas are working at nightclubs or other places with lower social status and Philippine is not as wealthy as Japan.

But if you come to Japan as a student and study seriously, you'll get respect from Japanese people.

>will the guy's family not approve because I am Filipina?

This is true. Many Japanese parents would not approve an idea of their son getting married with a FIlipina.

>Some even marry Japanese men for money more than for "love."

The "Japanese men" you are talking about is not so rich in the Japanese society. The "rich men" in the Japanese society can attract Japanese women so they do not want to get married with a Filipina.

Those men who want to get married with a Filipina is not so rich as to attract Japanese women for money. But they are rich enough to attract Filipinas.

I can answer this question from a point of view of discrimination at the work place by Japanese employers of Filipino employees.

It is common for them to employ Filipino employees in lower end jobs and then further discriminate against them by for example extending their probationary period during which which they earn a lower salary.

A International Pre School called Milkyway International Preschool in Motoyawata and Ichikawa has a reputation for employing Filipino teachers, making them work to the ground on a 5 month contract. The terms are that the first three months is on half salary, however after the first three months the probationary period is extended for no valid reason for another 2 months - meaning the entire contract is worked on half salary.

There are incident upon incident like this by company upon company.

It is a disgrace what Japanese do to Filipinos and the poor Filipinos can't do anything about it.

It was a general perception that Filipinas are night club workers and maids in Japan. But recently that perception is fading due the increasing presence of Russians and Chinese girls in night joints. Many Filipinas in Japan work in offices, care centers, hospitals and other decent workplaces. Some are students in the different prestigious academic institutions.

Yes Filipinas are looked down by Japanese. Japanese people see them as illegal immigrants and prostitutes...sorry but it's the fact.

I am a half Japanese and my mom is a Filipina. My dad is a Japanese. I was born in Manila but he registered my name in our family registry (koseki tohon), and so, I am a Japanese national too. My mom was not an entertainer. She was working as a social worker in Tokyo at the time when she met and married my father. She told me stories of how she was stereotyped in Japan, being associated to Filipina prostitutes. It was for this reason that they decided to settle here in Manila. My dad's family was also not in favor of her. I had some friends here in Manila, born of Japanese fathers (we are called Japinoys), and their moms told me the same stories. Some ended up in separations and divorce.

You shouldn't come. will feel language barrier and loneliness. Ppl don't speak English.
98% of population is Japanese in Japan.
And the nationality which cover of a significant portion of population in Japan is not Filipinas, but Chinese (if except the ppl who were born in Japan).

Japan is mono culture and different from the west. It is a country for the ppl who love and understand Japan culture.
Of couse I am not to say only for Japanese nationality.
