Maybe she is having financial problems, but that is her problem and not your responsibility. Do not babysit for her again until you get paid, and tell her that you can no longer trust her for the money, so if she wants you to babysit in the future you will need to be paid as soon as you arrive at her house. If you do not get paid within the next 2 weeks, give her a deadline (perhaps another 2-3 weeks), and tell her you will have to go to small claims court if she refuses to pay. And if she doesn't pay by the deadline, sue her in small claims court. You babysit to make money, and no one has a right to cheat you out of what they owe.

Ask her when she will be expecting to need you again so you can plan your financial situation for the coming days/weeks ahead. That way she will get the hint that you are somewhat reliant on her pay and that she shouldn't skimp on you just because she'll be taking advantage of the government.

You can't know she's telling you the truth so ask her to pay you up front before she takes her trip. If she hesitates, come right out and ask if she's having trouble being able to pay you. It will be up to you to decide whether you want to continue taking care of her child for the money or if you want to do it for free.

babysitting is a business. in order for you to have control over the situation and not allow the parents to take advantage of you, ask for payment before you watch the child. if there is no money, there will be no babysitting. this is a good life lesson.

If this is the first time give her the benefit of the doubt. But I wouldn't watch her daughter another time unless she evens up.

Telling if someone is lying is difficult.Keep asking for the money ,and if she keeps making excuses, she is probably lying.
