Why do they call Filipina girls "Pearls of the Orient"?

Actually, it's the country itself they call "Pearl of the Orient", got it from some local literally figure somewhere. Then it rubbed off to mean the Filipinas. As the title connotes, they really seem to be precious gems of the East.
