Because they need serious mental help. They are unstable and they take out their anger and frustration on a helpless animal. They are sick. They should do time.

Because they're sick, sick SICK! Most serial killers, yada, yada, have their beginnings as young children hurting and torturing animals. Good Lord, we had a neighborhood sicko that started out by cutting earthworms up into little tiny pieces. When asked why, he said it was because it was within his power and because he could. Saddest part is, he was only 5 when he started doing it. Then he started torturing the family dog when nobody was looking, and poking and hurting his classmates when he thought nobody was looking. And all the while mom and dad kept sayng, "You people are sick! There's nothing wrong with my child! How dare you suggest my child need counseling (even though the school psychologist suggested it as well) DENIAL!!! They switched schools rather than admit their child needed help. What kind of sick parent would do that rather than help their own child? And yet when their daughter showed up and said her boyfriend had been beating her up and abusing her these same parents said, "Come on, you're exagerating." Which is why she now lives with me. At least I know she's safe...temporarily.

Good question! Actually, it's very deep, because it tries to give insight to the dark side of human nature. Due to the fact that something/someone has to die, so that the other something/someone lives, humans developed that hunting behavior in which killing, hurting, and spilling blood of animals or other humans is everyday scene, a way of survival. Modern society distracted us from that kind of living, where we see meat in supermarkets only, so people are hunters no more. On the other hand, development of our societies distracted us from each other, so an individual needs someone who is always beside him/her, to communicate in a couple of ways (e.g. pets). But, isolation creeps underneath, so frustration lives on. Then, an individual has a need to relieve that frustration (loneliness, submission, ...), combined with a need to hurt/kill, plus irrational need to be in control, so abusement is a result. If you say "wrong", this is human judgement. In nature, there is nothing right or wrong, so animal has, what we call, an instinct to do this or that. There is never an excuse to abuse or punish an animal, those God's creatures have their own way of life, so what gives us right to hurt animals, unless in selfdefence?

People who abuse animals know that the animals will not do anything and that they are helpless.
In some countries, people eat certain animals and so they e abuse them just before killing them for food.
This is very sad question.

Because they are sick and it gets them off to have power over a defenceless animal. They probably also cant laid and have mental issues and to hurt an animal makes them feel like they have fufilment in their lives. Those are the sort of people that the world would be off not having.

Because people like to believe they are the dominant species, and hurting defenseless animals makes them feel like they're in charge. Plus, lots of people strangely enough believe that animals need to be abused to make them tougher, or more loyal or bs like that...

It makes them feel powerful even though they are the lowest kind of scum on earth!--They have no life-so they abuse helpless animals to make themselves feel good about themselves! BUT--one day they will have to answer for abusing one of GOD'S creatures!!!

They want to make another lifeform suffer they way are suffering. Most guys that get depressed lash out with violence instead of dealing with the depression. And pets or animals in general are an easy target.
