People has different point of view regarding on what is really the meaning of life. The meaning of life to me is to serve God and follow His will. I have faith that solely base on the bible so as a basis I will quote some verses coming from the bible.
Long time ago a wise man said this “Ecclesiastes 1:2 -14 Vanity of vanities, saith the Preacher, vanity of vanities; all is vanity.
What profit hath a man of all his labour which he taketh under the sun?
One generation passeth away, and another generation cometh: but the earth abideth for ever.
The sun also ariseth, and the sun goeth down, and hasteth to his place where he arose.
The wind goeth toward the south, and turneth about unto the north; it whirleth about continually, and the wind returneth again according to his circuits.
All the rivers run into the sea; yet the sea is not full; unto the place from whence the rivers come, thither they return again.
All things are full of labour; man cannot utter it: the eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear filled with hearing.
The thing that hath been, it is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun.
Is there any thing whereof it may be said, See, this is new? it hath been already of old time, which was before us.
There is no remembrance of former things; neither shall there be any remembrance of things that are to come with those that shall come after.
I the Preacher was king over Israel in Jerusalem.
And I gave my heart to seek and search out by wisdom concerning all things that are done under heaven: this sore travail hath God given to the sons of man to be exercised therewith.
I have seen all the works that are done under the sun; and, behold, all is vanity and vexation of spirit. “
If we will read the entire book of Ecclesiastes we will see that Solomon searching for “what is the purpose” or ”the meaning of life”. He do everything what his heart desire/wants but in the end he got one conclusion for what is the meaning or purpose of life: And he wrote “Ecclesiastes 12:13 Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.”
And I believe in what Solomon’s believe in.

To see what is inherently right in front of you but for whatever evolutional reasons cannot see, not because someone else did this, but because you deeply yet, simply choose not to see through constant craving and constant aversion.
I encourage you to research on the subject of enlightenment. Buddha would be a great place to start if you are open to gaining new awareness about what is real and what is not and what meaning that holds for you. Or perhaps Christ.
I can assure you what most of us "see" as real is actually not real at all. There are many ways to truly experience this. But one I strongly recommend and practice is a meditation technique called Vipassana. An insight meditation that was given to the world about 2500 years ago. Do not concern yourself with who gave it, rather only that it is here for you to obtain anytime you simply choose to obtain it.
Nothing is solid. Everything in the entire Universe is literally one. You CAN achieve this experience as so many already have. You will clearly understand the meaning of life because you will be experiencing it and living it instead of merely contemplating it on an intellectual level or associating it with the number 42. :o)

The meaning of life is different to every person. You should decide what you want of your life, and define it's meaning. If you believe in God then one of our purposes on earth is to worship God, but there are many other things that need to be found out, like who you really are and if there is an after life
What i'm trying to say is that the meaning of life is a very subjective thing, and it is up to you, to give it a definition.

Those who claim to know what life means play God.
It is written,, "As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts. Isaiah 55:9
and
God said, "Said in my haste, All men are liars." Psalm 16:11
What is the meaning of life?
To answer your question, Only God knows.

The meaning of life is to seek the meaning of life.
Be good, do good. In doing so you will learn the meaning, grasshopper.
Either that, or it's "42".

Life in itself is empty and meaningless. We - the meaning making machines - try and give it meaning. Therefore wasting precious time. Life is not to be interpreted, live is to be lived.

Love, Happiness, helping others...
of course u will get many 42's from one certain movie, but perhaps you should also watch Monty Python's The Meaning of Life.
It will explain everything, though 42 probably explains it much better. :p
