kwame brown although his entire draft class was pretty weak with the best player of the lottery being arguably pau gasol...which in joe smiths lottery kevin garnett and jerry stackhouse should have been top picks but both of these guys never really lived up to the hype of a number 1 overall pick in a draft...

Firstly, Sam Bowie wasn't picked by the Nets but by Portland at # 2 in the 84 Draft, below Hakeem Olajuwon and above Michael Jordan. Len Bias was picked 2nd in the 1986 draft behind Cleveland's Brad Daugherty.

The all time first overall pick bust award should go to...

La Rue Martin 6'-11'' 208 lbs 1st Overall in by Portland in 1972, ahead of Bob McAdoo.

In only FOUR NBA seasons, Martin never averaged more than 7 ppg and 5 rpg. His career averages of 5.3 ppg and 4.6 rpg were only beefed up by his 1974-75 season.

oh boy.

first off the biggest misconception on this board is that sam bowie was selected first when he was chosen second by the portland trialblazers over michael jordan (who was selected 3rd by Chicago) in 1985. Akeem (later changed to Hakeem) Olajuwon was chosen first by Houston that year.

As far as talent goes, Joe Smith was a much more talented player than Oli. Do not forget about Out of Service Pervis Ellison. He was the king of injuries after being the first pick in the 1990 draft by Sacramento. At least Oli is in the game almost nightly...

oli is the worst so far. BUT!!

Can you call him out only or the scout of the team that made him the number one pick???

I agree. Olowakandi has never reach the expectations and it seems that every time he plays for a team they start losing more and more. In 12 seasons he just have played one season in the playoff putting up numbers as low as 2.1 PPG and 3.5 RPG and shooting a horrible (especially for a guy that 7'0'' tall) 32.4% from the field goald in 15 games.

Kwame Brown hasn't either, but currently he has an important defensive role with the Lakers and he played well in last year playoff. On the other hand, Joe Smith have had solid seasons through his career and he's still playing good minutes from the bench with Philly.

Kandiman is just terrible compared to the other two! Joe Smith was actually solid for about 3 years up in Milwaukie and is still playing these days, Brown is coming into his own in LA but playing with who might be the league's MVP in the next couple days in everybody's mind if he keeps playing out of this world! Sorry! Kandi has never really done anything and I just really thought he was the worst pick of the three!

Easily the Kandi Man, Joe Smith is still playing 10 years later, Kwame Brown is still a young player, but Kandi just rides the bench. He is the biggest bust, by far.

I would argue that a number 2 pick was the biggest bust of all time. Len Bias (MD) died of a cocaine overdose after being selected by the Celtics in 86 or so
