Nope. All it will do is puncture a hole in the gas can. Military tracer bullets will, but that's military. The only way you could get it to explode with ordinary bullets is to let a lot of flammable gas out then shoot a metal case with a fully jacketed metal bullet (eg. some sorts of subsonic rounds), and hope the friction creates sparks to ignite the gas.

Also, explosive bullets won't work. Everyone thinks that explosive bullets have real explosives in, but that is very rarely the case. Most explosive bullets just have a small hole drilled in them filled with mercury, which flies forward when the bullet hits the target, and destroys the end of the bullet, throwing lead outwards. This wouldn't ignite the gas can.

No, in National Geographic Channel, they explained that gas will only explode when it is heated in a very compressed state, so the gas fired is not compressed and not heated, and also this explains that a car shot by a gun will never ever explode like most games and movies

There are special bullets that can be used and in that case yes but the gas can must be almost empty because the liquid would not explode that way. Military surplus bullets called tracers would ignite a gas can. There are also exploding bullet rounds that may not be available anymore that would work

Also, gasoline is not explosive. The fumes are. Unless you had a projectile with lots of heat (only one I can think of is a flaming arrow), it would not blow up. I'm not sure if an arrow could be lit on fire and shot... hmmm... I'll ask.

no, becuase you wanna know why? cuase there are no explosives in the actual bullet nor is there any significant heat, therefor all you'll do if you shoot a gas can is make it leak!

I believe that the MythBusters did it on their show once and they were not successful. It might be possible in some circumstances, but I think overall, it wont happen.

mythbusters tried and it was busted because there isn't enough heat in the bullet to cause an explosion
