my cramps get really bad too. they have for years, but i've slowly figured out how to take care of myself well.
Things I do that help a lot:
1. take motrin or midol the day before my period or as soon as it starts to not let the pain get too bad in the first place.
2. drink LOTS of water - being hydrated really helps
3. avoid foods with lots of salt. it makes cramps worse.
4. use a heating pad. they have disposable ones that last for eight hours that you stick to the front of your underwear up against your belly. the heat helps the muscles and pain so much. they are called thermacare heating pads.
5. stretch and go for a run or otherwise exercise in the morning. getting the blood pumping and opening up the muscles lets them breath better and makes pain lessen. it's hard to get up and get started, but i swear it helps a bunch!
6. take a hot bath.
7. eat dark chocolate. yum!
8. eat yogurt and other good dairy and high protein foods.
9. if you can't function - go to your doctor who can try to help with prescription meds.
i have also found that if i am eating healthy and exercising regularly my cramps are better. so the better you treat yourself all month the better you'll feel hopefully.

Do you get big blood clots? It may be your blood. I have had bad pains (really unbearable actually) during menstruation myself. A friend of my is an acupuncturist and herbal consultant. I have used tea pills and they work very well. I only take them when I menstruate. I would talk to a pro about it though ne way.

Menstration is the "cleaning-out" process for your uterus. It may help to think of it in terms that your period is a "mini-birth-process". You are dealing with the same muscles and physical process as a birth, only in a much smaller way. Your cramps are from the contraction of your muscles, whether in your belly or in your back.
For some women, particularly young women, the pain can be intollerable. If that is the case for you, see your Dr. The Dr. may consider treatment with hormones to lessen your pain.

i always had those many times ago...these are the 2 things that i always did..
1-take something thats hot/warm, like a piece of cloth that you have fold think and let it stay for a short while on an electric iron..(yes the iron you use to iron your clothes..), and place it onto your lower bowel/abdomen..do it for several times until the pain goes away...
2-this is a home remedy from my mom..get some fresh tamarind, soak the flesh in a glass of hot boiling water..stir contantly to mix the tamarind and water...filter out the tamarind, add sugar, and drink...it helps...
