Weren't there people who thought that we ought not go to war? Did they "protest"? What were their grounds for feeling that way?

Serious question...no "smart aleck" answers, please!

The problem was, in 1939, Stalin (Soviet dictator and communist leader) signed the Nazi-Soviet Anti-Agression Act and the Communist party took an official anti-war stance against World War II. Immediately, any war protester was suspected of Communist involvement. Even though the pact between the Nazis and Soviets was very short lived (Hitler and the Nazis invaded the Soviet Union a couple years later), the Unites States immediately suspected war protesters were involved with communism somehow and this stuck around for quite awile; it even fueled the Red Scare!

Being a war protester would not have been very popular, but it was not then and is not now treasonous activity.

For a good example you may want to check the voting record of congress on President Roosevelts Declaration of War on December 8, 1941. There was I believe one decenting vote. She had her reasons I am sure. She (I'm pretty sure it was a woman) was not charged with anything that I am aware of.

World War II was far,far different from what's going on in Iraq. It's not even comparable. Why would anyone protest against the War? It needed to happen.Hitler could not have been left to his own devices and ignored.

They were all very cautious about ever speaking a negative word about this GREAT NATION, And the media would never have said a negative thing about our troops either, the people of America would have tared and feathered them and that is before the Government got a hold of them to slam them in jail. I wish that it was still this way. I am really tired of listening to a bunch of Anti-American News Casters, and reading the Anti-American crap in the papers, I think that if you live in this Wonderful Nation you need to defend it and if you can't then you need to move to a different Country and I really HATE our media. They are not only Anti-American they are LIERS!!!! I wish we could get back to the days when people appreciated living in the greatest Nation in the World. And that day that they jail Anti-American people that lived in this Country. I wish it was illegal to bad mouth America!

no, it may have been true in the year 1800 when the alien and sedition acts came out, but today, democracy doesn't use treason, unless you were helping another country against the US

I would think so. They tend to stretch the law back then. They probably check their ethnicity though.
