To the soutwest you can see Orion (his belt is the 3 stars right in a row) with red Betelgeuse at his shoulder, and Rigel at his knee. Gemini is right above Orion. Sirius is to the left a bit (it's really bright)

If you look northeast you can find Ursa Major and Minor as well as Regulus in Leo and Arcturus in Bootes

Get a good computer program like "Starry Night". You can adjust the atmospheric lighting to show what you might see in urban California. There are many thousands of stars visible if you are away from the cities.
I live in Portland, Oregon and my only a very few of my students have ever seen the Milky Way - light pollution.

You can see about 1,500 stars in the northern California sky. Pick an area and we'll try to tell you the names of the main stars there.
