What are the benefits of multiculturalism?

How has multiculturlaism benefited the US? and what influence does it have on American culture?

ideally, it eliminates tensions between countries by breaking down isolation, it naturally takes the best aspects of all cultures and drops the worst through social evolution, it gives all people a chance to be themselves and choose their beliefs.
Unfortunately, when used by idiots, it creates a place where everyone is afraid to make judgements on anyone else's behavior, for anything.

Loaded question. But I think in a nutshell that most of the technological advancements and cultural contributions wouldn't be so varied if there was not a mix of different cultures. In other words, the culture would be more dull because of the lack of outside influences.
