I know what it is....but what it the point of it? What is the purpose behind it? Is the purpose related to health or is it just ritual??

I'll keep it short because I have a large opinion on the practice of penile mutilation (and I guess you can tell my stance!)

First, it has a few origins. They are

1. Religion: The Jews thought (and most still think) that it's necessary

2. Medical (Cancer): Some people think that there is an increase of penile cancer with the skin attached (WRONG!)

3. Medical (STD): Some think it increases STD. This is also wrong

4. Medical (Hygiene): This was supposed to eliminate problems with cleanliness. How hard is it to retract the skin to clean? Shouldn't be too bad.

5. Moral / Religion: It's rumored that by cutting the skin off, it stops masturbation.

What it actually does is remove up to 1/2 of the penis' skin (remember that it's a redundant fold, so it's a lot of skin). That causes "desensitization" of the penis. It's not necessary and female circumcision isn't practice because it's seen as cruelty.

I hope people make better decisions. Why would someone do this to their child after knowing the aforementioned?!

The exact origin is still unknown, but it dates back to thousands of years ago, apparently. Some sources say people did it back then because when they were at war, sand would often get caught inside a soldier's penis, causing an itch, and getting soldiers killed, of course. Other sources say that ancient people found out that it was cleaner (remember that back then, they didn't bathe much), and my last source says that people thought removing the foreskin would make people unable to masturbate after a while, (they thought masturbation was a huge sin) but it turns out that after getting a circumcision, guys just loose sensitivity on their penis, but they can still masturbate. I think it was just started by Jewish people who wanted to be a little different.
Nowadays, circumcision is done eather for appearances, religion, or the belief that it is cleaner and would decrease the change of spreading an STD. Many universities have said that circumcision is not necessary, since most guys know how to keep themselves clean. So, it's not really any cleaner, and since mostly every self-respecting guy uses condoms nowadays, there's not a higher chance of passing on or getting an STD because you're uncircumcised. It's really just up to the parent, based on what they believe.

in the USA and a few other countries where circumcision is more widely practiced it is either habitual or ritual. For Jews and Muslims it is a matter of religion.

Other than that, it is entirely unnecessary surgery with no medical basis. Of course over the decades in the USA, doctors have had many reasons for their cutting. they have at one time or another claimed that circumcision cures everythign from insanity to epilepsy to masturbation. but none of the diseases were ever cured by cutting off foreskin and masturbation is definitely not in need of a cure (everyone does it anyway) so all they were doing was inventing reasons to make money cutting off perfectly healthy tissue.

It's done for religious and health reasons by Muslim and Jews and for health reasons by others.

I was circ'ed fairly recently and I didn't have any pain or discomfort whatsoever. It looks great and there's no longer any smell, especially in summer because there's no smegma or stale urine buildup problem.

I haven't lost sensitivity in the glans (the size of which increases after the op by the way) and the feeling around the cut line during erections is nothing short of electrifying! I kept the frenulum intact because of personal preference.

I didn't lose any nerve endings in the inner foreskin. But I don't think it's possible anyway because a penis is all about deep-pressure sensors and sensations of pleasure have almost nothing to do with the foreskin.

The anti-circ league have no clue and neither does anyone who hasn't been circumcised as an adult.

I just read this. Humans find it necessary to perform surgery after birth to make the male correct.
What does that infer?
It has nothing to do with health. It is a ritual. For what baby is not born perfect?
Was Jesus circumcized?
We must be circumcized to be recognized as Christians. Says who? The christian bible. The book of Isreal.

It can be both health and ritual depending on where you live in the world. But for the most part its a health practice. Removing the extra foreskin reduces risk of infections. Males should be thorough in cleaning that area if the aren't circumcised.

ADVANTAGES OF BEING INTACT:
--Circumcision cuts WAY down on sexual enjoyment for the man due to loss of nerve-rich foreskin.
--Getting cut causes the glans (head) to develop a keratinized layer to protect from rubbing on clothing, further cutting sensation. Many cut men are unable to ejaculate during intercourse and have to finish "by hand." Intact men can "go all the way."A new study out this week proves conclusively, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that circumcision decreases sensitivity for the man. http://www.blackwell-synergy.com/doi/abs/10.1111/j.1464-410X.2006.06685.x
--A full 90% of women say sex is better with an intact man. http://www.healthcentral.com/drdean/408/60750.html --foreskin makes masturbation more fun - and better for your partner to play with.
--Circumcision hurts when it's done, even if you were too young to remember it
--a cut penis looks kind of sad with that scar where the foreskin belongs. Uncut is much hotter looking.
--Circumcision has a slight chance of complications. Each year a few baby boys have to have their entire penises amputated and undergo surgery to make them into fake girls. And a few die.

ADVANTAGES OF BEING CUT: Circumcision has no advantages that are not fictional
--You can be just as clean if you are uncircumcised. Wash. It's THAT simple. Even if you're cut, you still need to wash.
-- If you're sleeping around, you need to use condoms regardless or you will get diseases.
--most women are sensible enough not to discriminate against uncut guys. If they do, they are too shallow to bother with and totally ignorant of the pleasure they can get from a WHOLE man. See link above.
--Some studies have shown a lower rate of cancer of the penis in cut guys, but this cancer is so rare that it's hard to get a good statistical sample. More boys/men die each year from botched circumcisions than from cancer of the penis.
--Recent reports from Africa say that circumcision reduces the risk of AIDS from unprotected hetrosexual activity. This has little relevance to areas of the world where condoms are cheap, readily available, and culturally acceptable

It is a ritual of Jewish and Islam religion but some advantages have been found after decades. But female circumcision is placed in that category and is a statue of cruelty!

It's suppost to keep the penis safe of possible infection. But I think it's really a ritual that has become acepted. Have you heard of FGM (Female genital mutilation)? Google it. It's suppost to be circumcision in females, but in reality it isn't. This has nothing to do with your question, but i think it's interesting to know.

to make cleaning and keeping it clean easier. an exposed head is naturally going to be cleaner than covered in skin all day.
for me and my g/f it made sex better for both. she'd never go down on an uncut one and shes greek so foreskin is kinda the norm. she's already told me any sons be losin it.
