I'm only offended when a foreigner criticizes the US out of ignorance. I don't offend other countries. I know one persons opinion doesn't represent a whole country.

If the criticism is legit then the open minded Americans won't be offended. If there is factual evidence that supports the criticism then the wise Americans will embrace them. However, when you start to criticize us without fact and with biased allegations then you will upset the cultivated Americans. It is the ignorant Americans that will deny our problems and be offended by any criticism to the Country.

Because in the USA we are taught from a very young to be proud of our country. Most of the history we are taught throughout school seems to be skewed towards making the USA look like "the good guys". On top of that it's rare that we are taught anything good about any other countries.

So depending on how impressionable people are many people blindly believe that the USA is the greatest country in the world. Not to imply that everyone that loves the USA is blindly following what they've been taught. Many people I've talked to who've gone overseas become more appreciative of the USA, once they've seen other countries, than they once were.

Most patriotic people are offended when their country is criticized. In reality, I think that most critics, if they came here to live among the regular everyday American, they would see that we are not much different than anyone else. Oh, sure, there are some cultural differences as there is in any country, but deep down, we are just like anybody else.

It's not just Americans that would be offended...Any citizen of their own country would be offended. A person's 'homeland' is likened to their family...If a person hears criticism of their family, they are offended. The USA is just a larger extension of a person's family.

The answer to that is simple. The same reason you are offended when someone criticizes whatever country you come from.

Americans are very insular, really, and have very little contact with points of view other than the ones foisted upon them by the media. The media, of course, are in the business of making certain that their advertisers are listened to, and therefore are compelled not to offend those who watch or read or listen to the news broadcasts. Unpleasant things like American errors are seldom mentioned.

I agree with some answers here that Americans need to realize that they're not the only ones in the world, and in all due respect, the world has much more fun than the Americans. There is so much going on. I went to London and Germany last year I literally did not wanna go back to USA. People are so real and awesome in Europe. There is no labels, no popular, no weird, everybody is just who they are, bu hey, I had to come back home deal with all the fake here in US.

I wouldn't be offended. I think the US should be criticized. But I know people who would rip your head off. They need to get in their heads that the US is NOT the only country in the world.
