I was very surprised to hear of it. I would like to know of any Web Sites that would tell me something about how this happen to my friend. Thank you for your time.

Depending on your state, google DOC (Department of Corrections) and your state. You will come up with a website that is for your DOC state. Most DOC state websites have inmate search then you would search his name and so forth. Some will tell you what he is in for and his pictures some like Alabama will only tell you his #, name, location, and EOS date. If he is with the feds you need to go to BOP website and do inmate search, but you will need his complete name spelled correctly.

Hi,
You can do a search for your friend in any prison and find out some information on him as to why he is serving time.
Just go to google and type in any local prisons that are close to you. (or the name of the prison that your friend is in)
Then that prison's website will show-up on your screen.
Look to the left of your screen and you will see OFFENDER SEARCH click on it, and be sure to scroll down to the screen where it says accept (be sure to read the terms and conditions b4 clicking the accept button)
After you click the accept button, Just type in all of the info that you know about your friend and all his info that his on file about him, will show up on the screen.

you can do a backround check...im not really sure how but i know that it is about $200....you do get a lot of info tho...
