accidentally dropped a loaf of fresh bread on the floor.Bread I had no intention of buying; I picked it up and bought it... not wanting someone else to get a loaf of bread that had been on the floor. (i figure we can go feed the ducks with it)
My husband, immediately said "what's this?" I explain.... and he says "well why didn't you put it back?" Because that's what he would have done....so I ask, would you buy it or put it back...?

You are wonderful (there are at least three reasons why):

1. You are considerate of others
2. You showed your son a fine example of responsibility
3. You are thinking about feeding the duckies

I'd have bought it as well. You have reaffirmed my faith in humanity; thanks.

Ah, the additional details made the difference to me. If the bread, *still in it's package* had fallen to the floor, I would have put it back. But it fell out of the package? Then I would buy it. You're right, it is not fair someone else should get bread that has been on the floor, because of something someone else did. You did a good thing.

Well, because it's bread and it most likely comes in from a separate vendor..I would probably give it to someone in the store or leave it. Having worked in retail long enough I know that no one is going to buy that (even if you left it on the shelf) and what will eventually happen (if not right away) is that the bread guy will take it away with the out-dates and give the store a credit for it. Most of the time there are more loaves then will sell because it's more benificial to credit some back than it is to sell out when you could have sold more.

I would not have bought it, but I would have put it back in the package and handed it to an employee in the bakery section explaining what had happened. If that employee then told me I had to buy it, I would have. But chances are they'd just take it back.

If however, my son had been disobeying me by picking up and touching everything he saw, I would have bought the bread and had my son "pay" for it with chores or whatever to teach a lesson ("this is why we don't touch things at the store.").

Please don't get me wrong, I am not assuming your son was being disobedient, it could have been an accident where he brushed up against it and it fell down or whatever. But MY son, well he's the type who would deliberately disobey me (we're having issues with that right now☺) so that's why I included that part in my answer.

The right thing to do is to buy it. However, if I was really poor and only had $20 to feed my kids that week, I would have put it back.

A lot of people damage bread and put it back and in the end it cost all consumer. To me it is the same as steeling because the store suffer a loss either way.

Your a good person and did the right thing; your husband needs an ethics class. Maybe one day you'll rub off on him.

I would have called "Clean up on isle four!"

Just kidding. I probably would pay for it if I had the money. The other day we went on a picnic and had no intention of doing anything else so we did not bring much $$ w/ us and left the purse @ home cause we had also hiked. I had this fun idea to go to the candy store because they had 10 cent candies and such. My son knocked over a bad of chocolate covered peanuts that cost $7 and the bag broke. All we had on us was $3 I told him to keep quiet. Immediately I felt awful and was in a hurry to get out of there. Instead of only allowing him a few pieces of 10 cent candies I let him get a dip of ice cream. To make me feel even worse the guy told him that since he was so cute he would give him a double dip then proceeded to give my husband and I a bunch of free samples on the pop corn! I felt so horrible! Next time we go we will spend more. L

I guess it depends on the policy of the store. It WAS just an accident, I assume your 4 year old wasn't being malicious. I think taking it to the ducks is a great idea! It's just a loaf of bread(I don't know why your husband was so upset). I think you taught your son a good lesson about when we make mistakes we need to make them right and good came out of it! Let's just hope he doesn't start throwing toys down! haha j/k

I would not have put it back. I would have giving it to someone who worked there and told them what happened. They understand those things happen. Then I would have just put in my mind they threw it away and didn't just put it back. :>) Buying it is OK though. Feeding the birds is a great idea your four year old will love it too. Glad you didn't put it back I like to think my bread has never been on the floor.

I think if it fell out of the package and landed on the floor, I'd have bought it. It's sort of the "you break it, you buy it" policy, except you're just ruining it in a different way.

I mean, how would you feel if you bought bread that someone else dropped on the floor, and you didn't know? Gross!

Well,,, I would have turned it in to someone working there and explain what happened. But I rather liked your idea of going to feed the ducks. Spending time with the kids feeding the ducks has more benifit than just putting it back. Great problem solving skills to deminstrate to your son. I give you an A++

Oh my gosh, of course I'd buy it. Feeding it to the ducks sounds like a wonderful idea. That'd be awful to have some innocent person buy something that fell on the floor. That's sick. You made the RIGHT decision.
