Hi, I am trying to boot my old computer (purchased about 6 years ago) that I have not used in a year. But now everytime I booted it, nothing would show up on the screen, and after a few seconds, I would hear this alarm like noise that alternates between two high and low pitched sounds. First I unplugged the harddrive's power, but the beeping continued. Does anyone recognize the problem? Thank you.

The kind of beeping can be diagnosed when you go into the bios. Most have arrows that will guide you to the source of your problem. Once in there, look to the left of each category till you see arrows>.

The alarm-like noise you are hearing is just that, an alarm. It is a code that tells you what component in the computer is stopping it from completing the POST routine.

Without knowing BIOS manufacturer, it is tough to know what the post code means. But, I will say that it is most likely a loosened component.

Most likely something came a little loose on the inside of the case. Either from Chip-creep or from just moving the computer around. Unplug everything and replug it back in. This will re-seat it and most likely solve your problem.

If it doesn't, then I would try a different stick of memory.

Ok, so you need to find out what kind of BIOS your computer has. To do this manually open up the side of your computer and locate the BIOS name, it should be on a chip somewhere around the bottom of your CPU. It will be something along the lines of AWARD or PHOENIX. Then, you need to look up the post codes or beep codes for you BIOS. This should tell you what is wrong.

Good luck!

Make sure the Video card is firmly pushed down into its slot. Make sure all the cards and memory is firmly pushed down in there slots. And finally make sure the CPU fan and case fans are all turning. This computer is to out dated to waste any more time on.

check the ram and video card. one is not working, or is not connected properly. If the computer cannot find one of these connected and working, it will beep and not continue booting.

I think it varies from motherboard to motherboard.. do you have the hardware manual withyou? you can check the manufacturers online site and see if they have any info... usually this beep is something to do with memory chips... try to disconnect them and reconnect and try to start your pc... even if your pc dont have a hard disk it will still start up and give you a message on the screen saying hard disk not found..... so its not to do with your hard disk....

I know overheating causes an alarm similar to what you are describing, maybe the cooling fan/s is/are not working ?

If your computer is not working properly while you are working on it, it could be a problem with device drivers, hardware or software.
