I don't think i'm setting this systems of equations word problem up correctly...if not how?

Tickets for one show on the Harlem Globetrotters' 75th Anniversary Tour cost $10, $18, or, for VIP seats, $30. So far, five times as many $18 tickets have been sold as VIP tickets. The number of $10 tickets equals the number of $18 tickets plus twice the number of VIP tickets. Sales of these total $9500. How many of each kind of ticket have been sold?

I tried to set it up like this but it doesn't work out to the right answer. Am I setting it up incorrectly?

If -
$10 = T
$18 = E
$30 = V

E = 5V
T = E + 2V
E + T + V = $9500

Your mistake is in the initial setup
T= the cheap Totally tickets (ie $10 tickets)
E = the Economical tickets (ie $18 tickets)
V= the VIP tickets (ie the $30 tickets)

The next equations were correct.
E = 5V
T = E + 2V

the last one was the wrong one
it should read:
$10 x T + $18 x E + $30 x V = $9,500

E, T and V are quantities (not money) Therefore, E + T + V can not give you any results with dollar amount. That is why you need to multiply them by their value.

Hope this helps for your next problem.

$30 VIP tickets= X
$18 = 1/5X
$10= 11/5X

10(11/5X)+ 18(1/5X) + 30(X) = 9500

22X+ 18/5X + 30X= 9500

278/5X=9500
278X= 47,500
X=171

$30 = 171 Tickets
$18 = 34 Tickets
$10 = 376 Tickets

given that T, E and V correspond to the number of tickets, E+T+V does not equal $9500 but 10T + 18E + 30 V = 9500 - this should get you on the right track.

t = number of $10 tickets
e = number of $18 tickets
v = number of $30 tickets

The variables should be what you're trying to find; in this case, the number of each type of tickets that were sold.

That should get you closer to the correct answer.

A= Number of $10 tickets sold.
B= Number of $18 tickets sold.
C= Number of $30 tickets sold.

10(5C+2C) + 18(5C) + 30C = 9500
10(7C) + 18(5C) + 30C = 9500
70C + 90C + 30C = 9500
190C = 9500
C = 50

B = 5(50)
B = 250

A = 250 + 2(50)
A = 250 + 100
A = 350

A = 350
B = 250
C = 50
