If the book is actually handed to me then I will read it. I used to work in a book store, so I had easy access to books that were recommended to me. Honestly, it depends on the book and it depends on how much free time I have. I love reading books that are recommended to me because it allows me to get to know the person who did the recommendation more. It is sort of the same thing when people recommend movies to me.

As a library director people are always asking me my opinion on what to read. I have heard many comments most positive on what I recommend. For example, a lady just wanted a funny book that was light reading. I recommended the "secret Ingredient" by Heller. She loved it and wants to read more of her other works.
I personally didn't like Lisey's story by Steven King, but I have given it to patrons and if they ask if I liked the book. I tell them If i don't care for the book that I would tell them afterwords when they brought it back if they wanted to talk about the book.

I asked the question awhile back about favorite werewolf stories. Jennifer suggested the book 'Bitten'...which I am having a ball reading. Sucked me right in. I was going to wait until I was finished with the book or the series before i thanked her. But now I think I will do so before finishing the read.
I have made suggestions as have you...and a few people send me private messages. Doesn't bother me that the majority do not. Good question.

I'm pretty good about listening to recommendations of my friends and people I know.
Some books I've read on advice were:
The Dark Tower series: it was ok
David Eddings works: like them a lot
A Song of Ice and Fire: loved it
Atlas Shrugged: didn't really like it but it did lead me to The Fountainhead which I liked
Crime and Punishment and The Brother Karamazov: did not care for them
For me personally, I find that recommendations are a good way to learn about books that I might like, but I can usually tell if I'll enjoy it beforehand.

I occasionally read their recommendations and very few of those recommendations are a good read. Other people have different tastes and opinions from you. It's rare for someone else to be completely like you. So other people reading the books you recommended is utterly useless because what you might think to be brilliant and dazzling, they may think it is boring and dull.

i haven't asked to have any recommend to me but when i give my answers i usually look at all the other answers as well and have made a list of the ones i haven't read yet so i can go borrow or buy them to try, a lot of them sound great.
i have head so much about the Twlight series, and the his darkness trilogy ( or something like that) that they are on my list to go look at. also i have on that list the Nonexistant Knight. but i haven't read any of them yet so i can't say as to if i like them or not. but i usually browse thru books stores on a regular basis and pick up lots of new authors that i don't really need to ask for any recommendation i have no problem finding new things to read

Mostly, I don't. This is because most people who recommend books to me have NO idea of my taste and I've learned from experience. If my son or my sister or daughter say I will enjoy a book, then I usually try it, because they know me! My sister recommended the Deric Longden books, which I enjoy. My daughter recommended Jill Mansell, and my son, Raymond Feist.

Yes - my sister has flawless taste in picking books for me to read. So far she has introduced me to No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency and The Namesake, to name a couple. My sister and I love discussing books, especially the ones we've both read. When she picks out a book for me and then I go back and say I loved it, I think it really perks up her day!

If you mean books recommended on Yahoo answers, well few days back Ninja_Superstar recommended Wilkie Collins to me and I read a couple of his books. That was mainly because I found them on Project Gutenberg but once started, I quite enjoyed them.
Besides that I read "Pollyanna" on recommendation.

I read the books recommended to me sometimes, if my friends read the book and we can have a mini book club meeting after wards, about the book. This encourages me to read it. It is also a encourages us to get together since we are always busy.
