I sent a letter to the editor to my local paper because I believed that the school menu be changed in consideration of the lenten season. I asked that they switched Thursday's choice of fish burger to Friday. Because of the impact of my letter, the menu for the district was changed. I had stated that even tho there is church n state, that it states how the state cannot force someone or keep someone from practicing a religion. Serving the fish, did not force anyone to practice the catholic religion because there was still a choice of meat. That friday, a girl, threw tuna at me in front of the whole cafeteria making sure she had everyone looking. She threw the tuna said "heres ur f-ing fish" loud to turn the heads of the student body and told me i should have kept my mouth shut and not to bring religion into her life, as if all there was to eat was fish. Was i wrong in any way by sending my letter?

Absolutely not! I actually am a bit amazed that the district granted your request. Most of the time our school system is so adamantly against any form of religion going near schools that they reject all of it.

Don't let the fish-throwing girl get under your skin. Obviously the problem is with her. There were other types of meat available; it wasn't like ALL meat except fish was removed and she was "forced" to acknowledge religion. I would suggest that you instead pray for her. Who knows what her beef is, but this is a grand opportunity to show her the beauty of Christ by living your faith and praying for her. I love this quote from St. Francis of Aussi (something like this): "Preach and spread the gospel every day of your life, and when necessary, use words."

God bless, and live the Faith.

47 wrongs don't make a right.
You were/are free to express your opinion that the school should change the menu. That is freedom of expression. Should the school have gone along with it? In my opinion, no, they should not have. Public schools really should not get into different religious policies. For example, someone might be a vegetarian, but that can't influence what the school offers. The vegetarian still has the choice of what the school offers or bringing lunch from home.
The young lady had a right to express HER opinion, which could have been done in a way more decent way. Throwing tuna at you is assaultive, irregardless of what the motivation was.

You had a right to send the letter.

She commited a crime by assaulting you, and you have witnesses to that fact (if she hit you).

She had a right to say what she did.

You have free speech. So does she. She didn't lie about you (though you and I may not agree with what she said).

You are never wrong for exercising your freedom of speech, but at the same time it is silly not to expect that some will disagree with you, perhaps violently so.

She had the right to express her opinion, and you had the right to respond to it. Neither of you had to stand there and listen to the person do it, however.

Keep writing. Keep speaking up.

Oh, and the menu should not have been changed for the reasons you stated. You did not have to eat at the cafeteria, thus they did not have to supply you with fish on Friday. It would have been inconvenient, but I can think of lots of religions that are inconvenienced by standard cafeteria menus every day.

Tough. Bring a lunch.

Keep speaking up, dear. You weren't wrong even if EVERYONE disagreed with you (which clearly everyone did NOT disagree).

Isn't a little power fun? Try more. Help shape this country we live in. Makes us stronger.
