Why are protons and neutrons also known as nucleons?

nucleons mean particles of the nucleus. since both protons and neutrons are found in the nucleus, they are collectively known as nucleons.

the term nucleons can be extremely helpful when dealing with atomic mass (because electrons are so light that they contribute very little to the mass) and the strong force (which is based on number of nucleons)

Because they are both found in the nucleus of an atom hence the "nucle" part of the term, and the end of both proton and neutron end in "on," therefore giving you the abbreviated nucleon. That's what my high school chemistry teacher told me, since I had the exact same question.

They aren't as far as I know, but if they are it would be because they are the particals that make up the nucleus.

I advocate amateur tons....and I wouldn't be so harsh on the leons......
now I got two thumbs down for a little humour....did you get the joke?!
