Looks like Playtex has only stage 1 and stage 2 nipple, unlike Dr Brown (stage 1 - 3).

For my son, I noticed the nipple start to collapes, and it was taking him a really long time to finish the bottle. That's when I moved him to stage 2, which lasted him untill he turned one. I don't know how it compares to the Dr. Brown stages, because the ventaire was the only bottle I used (it was the only one that kept him from getting gas).

I don't think it's so much the age as the babies preference. My 8 1/2 month old still uses stage one but my neighbors baby has been on stage 2 since the start. there is a really noticeable difference in flow between 1 and 2, your baby might not be to thrilled with it, but you can try at any age and see how he does.

Don't know exactly how to describe this. But, if there is a "smacking" type of sound when the baby is eating then it is time to move up to the next size. Another sign would be if it is taking the baby a lot longer to finish a bottle (20 minutes or more).
