"The Message" by Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five is to rap as "Rock Around the Clock" is to rock 'n' roll.
If you really want to get into the roots of rap music, try to find some stuff by a '60s group called The Last Poets. Some of their songs I remember are "Mean Machine", "When the Revolution Comes", "Two Little Boys" and "Jones Comin' Down".

"Whats My Name?" - Snoop Dogg. Gotta have the classic '90s gangsta stuff. And the other classics "Baby Got Back" - Sir Mixalot and "Cant Touch This" - MC Hammer.
Anything by Chamillionaire is good too. "Turn it Up", "Ridin'", No "Snitchin'". All good songs.
Ludacris has some good tunes as well, but I cant think of any names at the moment. Same thing goes for Tupac.
If you dig political rap, you can check out Immortal Technique. Hes pretty good.

Kanye West: Homecoming, touch the sky, flashing lighting fixtures furniture, gold digger, heard 'em say, jesus walks, in the process the cord, can not tell me nothin', stable life, greater advantageous. Lil Wayne: A milli, have been given money, bypass dj, fireman, lollipop. T.I.: in spite of you like, stay your life, what you comprehend, why you wanna.
