My boyfriend and I got a new dog. When we got home our two cats immidiately puffed up and hissed even while he was in the crate. Now a few hours later the older cat (1.5yrs) doesn't have a problem with the dog, he basicly ignores him so I feel comfortable in their future. BUT my kitten (about 11 to 12 months old) hisses and growls everytime the dog near. She stalks him and watchs his every move. I know this is all normal but I fear my kitten isn't going to get over herself. My boyfriend tried to comfort her and she took a crunk out of his arm. Since she is mine when I held her she didn't have any problems, but then she just started growling at me even though she was purring not but 10second previously.
I fear she is going to take an aggressive turn and we'll have to give up the dog... I NEED tips on what to do to make this experience work for both the new dog and my kitten. Do's and Don'ts... Whatever you have to offer!!!

I'd like to clarify I understand that pets are not merchandise. I am close friends with the previous owner. She wanted to show him but his temperment is well... too laid back to be a show dog. Not that means much to me, he is just the sweetest little thing ever, but if things can't be worked out it isn't fair to the kitten or the dog, ya know?

Fi,
Normally a kitten would take her cue from her momma (or any older cat). If she sees the older cat handling the situation, then she will probably be OK with the dog. Let her see the older cat and the dog getting along. It's the kittens instinct to be fearful (and territorial) and it may take the kitten a little longer than the older cat. If the kitten is stalking the dog then she is coming around (maybe trying to play). If the dog isn't pestering the cats they should be OK. Also, the kitten needs her space and somewhere she knows she can go to be free of the new family member.
Also, unless the dog is a tea cup chihuahua (or a little puppy), I wouldn't worry about the kitten being too aggresive.

The situation will improve GREATLY when they will lose the competition for food fears.
As soon as you brought the pup home, you should have made a big production of everybodys position in the food chain.

First cat- here is YOUR food and water dish.

Second cat- this one is YOURS.

and NEW dog- here is yours.

WHat may have happened was that first cat already established territory on the food chain line. Second cat takes pole position.
When dog came, plenty of attention to dog in crate, and second cat still took pole position. Therefore, he /she felt the need to fight for position.

Next feeding time, and thereafter, all you have to do is make a bit of production for cat number two. It will make her feel less insecure . Create a special "for cat number 2 only " food dish area.

be patient!!! make sure your cats have a "safe spot" which should be some where high, where they can go to when they are scared. Give the dog time to learn that the cats rule the place... keep your dog on a leash when you introduce them to each other. if you have to, put a baby gate, that way the dog cant get over and the cats can..But like i said, be patient and dont give up your dog or cats. they will come around.. and if the dog is aggressive towards them, just make sure the cats know where they can hide and be safe.

Time will heal the 'pain'.
Since the older cat is getting used to a dog, I believe the younger one will too, but it just takes more time. She's just scared.
Leash the dog. This will tell the cat that she is still 'bigger' in the house. Once she gets used to the dog, then unleash it.

I would be worried if the kitten would scratch the puppies eye. Cat scratches take long to heal and your kitten could seriously damage the pups eye or worse pull it out. I hope things work out, however if I were you I wouldnt leave your puppy unsupervised.

the only do-s i suggest is to take "your time" and let the pets take their time...while you watch the scene and may be video the whole thing and let us know how they are coming along. in conclusion -- time is of essence. and please do not give up or give away your new pet - animals are not "merchandise" to be bought and discarded when things do not work out. hope it helps.
