Did I do something wrong when I installed the hard drive on my computer or did I do something else wrong? Any ideas would be helpful, thanks!

If you're putting a large hard drive into an old computer, your BIOS might not recognize all of the space on the drive.

Most hard drives (retail, not OEM) come with a utilities disc that will trick your PC into recognizing more of the room on the drive. Or you could check with the manufacturer of your PC's motherboard, and see if there is a BIOS update that will allow you to use a bigger hard drive.

Use the disk tools that came with your drive. If you didn't get a CD, then go to the manufacturers website and look for utilities or tools under their support menu.
Some large drives don't get read properly without first adding an overlay.
You may also not have "large drive" enabled in your BIOS settings.
Don't sweat it, this is easy to fix.

If you have an older machine, the machine's BIOS might not be able to see all the space, it might only be able to see the 33.8 GB of space. You may need to update the BIOS.

Try removing the partition, and add a new one. And when it asks for the size, insert the max amount. It then should work. Removing a partition means formatting and removing the C: drive. You will need a copy Windows and a backup of your files.

all those ppl makin a big deal out of nothing......if ur using it for a slave drive......make sure that the jumpers r in place ......run a wndows xp disk...delete the old partition......create a new 1......(chances r that theres more than 1)......format and make sure that u partition it as a NTSF not a FAT32.......160 gig hard drive isnt that big and 90 % of all the bios out there will cover it unless ur running a dinosaur like a commador 64........good luck

Yes I have some idea. Its probably because of either you don't have a high enough service pack, or there is a limiting jumper on it, or you rig wont handle that big of a drive. My brother had the same problem.

Your problem is you have it set as a slave, dos and windows does not like having a larger slave drive than the master. go to control panel click on hardware devices, click on the drive and click refresh drive, if it is set as fat 16 or fat 32 then go to properties and rest properties to except large disk space partitions. then close it should be OK, if not set it as NTFS and use large disk support. it will fix the problem, no need for software or tools.
