Maybe she is farther along than she thought.

Tell her not too worry. When her doctor said "too big" I am sure what he meant to say was "too big for 5 months" That could mean a few different things. One, he calculated her due date wrong or Two, she is starting to get gestational diabetes. Either way, the baby will be FINE. She will go in next week and have her sonogram to get a more accurate view of the baby and at that point the doctor will decide if her child looks developmentally older than 5 months, or not. If not, I am certain he will order a glucose test (and if he doesn't your SIL should mention it to him)
If she does have gestational diabetes, she will just need to monitor her sugar intake for the rest of her pregnancy and (as has been mentioned already) worst case scenario she will have a c-section delivery.

I'm not a professional by any means but I have had gestational diabetes with all three of my kids and every one of them I contracted it earlier and earlier. They usually don't give you the glucose test until you are about 27 weeks, but my last one they gave it to me at 16 weeks and with this one I'm taking it at 14 weeks because at 11 weeks I measured 20 weeks. My first baby was fairly small (6 lbs. 4 oz.), but my second one weighed 9 lbs. 12 oz., and my third only weighed 7 lbs. 4 oz. but he was 2 months early, so they told me it was possible that he could be 12-13 pounds if he went full term. So, to make a long story short...lol, it could be a big baby. Only a sono can tell. Good luck to them and bless you all.

It could be that the baby's mother has become diabetic. Gestational diabetes often causes big babies.
My daughter had a big baby (by c section) and she had gestational diabetes. Now, she and the boy are both fine, but do need to have checkups done once in a while for diabetes. Her doctor said she may be diabetic when she gets older. Wants her to watch her diet and be sure to exercise, as a precaution.

sometimes the dates are off. but the most common reason for big babies is gestational diabetes. There's nothing wrong, but she might have a hard time pushing if the baby gets stuck. The worse thing is that she'll have a c-section. No worries. Just tell her to watch what she eats and take it easy.

The baby could be just big.But also if she has not been tested for genstational diatbeties then she needs the test now to rule that out. They could have made a mistake at her due date.If it was me I would not worry until the doctor said something is wrong. All the doctor said is the baby is big.Alot of big babies being born that is healthy.

When a doctor tells a mother and father to be that their baby is "too big" at 5 months along....it is time to get a new doctor. There could be one of two reasons that the baby is big.
#1...the baby is big. (not rocket science, I know, but was a jerk of a doctor to worry them like that!)
#2...the doctor made a mistake on the due date. They may be farther along than they thought.
Tell them to get a second opinion.

I was told in my third pregnancy that the baby was measuring larger than my dates. I was sent for an ultrasound to make sure there wasn't too much fluid. Everything turned out fine, I just have large babies!
