Try a polishing compound first, you can always go to a courser compound if you have to. Just like everyone else said, be real careful, you can go through a coat of paint before you know it. Good luck

Yes, but do not apply too much pressure when rubbing. Here is some advice from automotivetouchup.com.
Clearcoat instructions. Like the advice given above, I would first try clear-coat safe polishing compound. If you don't see the desired results, then I would try rubbing compound. Always read the compound manufacturer's directions thoroughly before use.
Please allow 30 minutes after the last layer of base coat color application to apply touch up clearcoat. Apply 2-3 coats of clearcoat using a light dabbing motion waiting 10-20 minutes in between each coat. Be gentle with the brush because you do not want to disturb the undercoats.
Clearcoat should be dry to the touch in 1-2 hours, but will completely dry overnight. Use Rubbing Compound once fully dry to bring out and optimum level of gloss. Do not wax the fresh paint for one month.

You do have to be careful with rubbing compound... BUT it's not going to eat through the paint as easily as people make it seem. Today cars come with a thick coat of clear I believe something like 3 millimeters of clearcoat which would take a while of buffing with rubbing compound to eat through it. There's a tutorial where a guy from a shop shows how to remove small to medium scratches on a BMW's hood by buffing for ten minutes with rubbing compound. If there is current damage to the clearcoat like peeling or extended uv ray damage which has made it thin then better to repaint and blend cause even polishing compound will strip it right off.

No, you should not use rubbing compound, the reason why, rubbing compound contains strong abrasives and this is used to break the glaze on your cars paint. If you want to remove oxidization or shine the paint use polishing compound, this compound contains a small amount of fine abrasives which will remove the oxidization and shine your car really nice.

If you went threw the clearcoat you would have seen a color transfer to the cloth you where using. If you used a power buffer you might have, but would have burned the finish first. You can correct the haze with the use of a finer compound (swirel remover)and then a finishing glaze. Be careful! They dont put much paint on cars when they use a clearcoat finish. most new cars are done in a basecoat-clearcoat blended mix. I assume your is ither a repainted or older car. good luck, and take your time doing it. test a area first, then use a buffer on SLOW in shade for each. Wax after.

be car full. if you don't know exactly what your doing you will screw up the paint job. i know body shop guys and they have many different abrasive levels of chemicals and polishes. in most cases you can have a vehicle rubbed and polished reasonably. and the paint will look like new. also rubbing compound doesn't bring the shine out. it is an abrasive used to remove a layer of what it's used on. you then need to polish after wards to bring the luster back out.

I would first try a polishing compound as they are not as abrasive as rubbing compound, and you may get the results you desire with that.Just make sure that the com pond(polishing or rubbing) states on the lable that it clearcoat safe.
