hello all....I finally got my open licence yesterday...horray for me!
so next week I am hoping to buy a bike. I was thinking of a sv650 because they seem to get such a good rap but the owner of a bike shop suggested a Yamaha FZ6-NT Fazer, they have a 2005 model.
He was going on about a 4 cylinder being better for me. I am female, lightweight and 5"4.

Does anyone have any suggestions??

Hi, I'm a Yamaha dealer and am going to be as honest as I can with you about your purchase. The Yamaha FZ6 is a great bike as is the SV650. Granted, the FZ6 will run and hide from a SV650, will be smoother than a SV because it is a in-line 4. But, the FZ has the SV by about 30 lbs. and I am sure the SV will do everything you are wanting to do. It is a pretty trick looking bike. I would probably do the SV if I were you. Unless, you're feeling the need for speed and smooth. Seat height is right at the same. Be safe no matter what you get and have fun!!

I'd say the sv650, it's a well mannered easy to ride bike, that handles real well, and looks really sweet with it's tube frame and V-twin cylinder engine. It's a great bike to start off on, and has plenty of after market parts for it to make it go faster or look super cool. Plus, it has pretty good power and can handle the curves, traffic, or mall parking lots with ease. I'm glad you prefer the sv650, I believe it's the perfect size and performance for you. I have a Yamaha yzf r1, it's a awesomely fast bike, but the seat height like on most sportbikes may be too high for you, and the powerful engine is definately not for novices.

p.s. the sv650's v-twin motor sounds very nice.

I have a SV650. Its a really fun bike to ride. Its not as fast as alot of other sport bikes, but with the wide handle bars, its very easy to handle, and easy to maintain. Its also high off the ground like most sport bikes and unlike easy riders that are way low. My wife is 5'6" and can barely get her tip toes on the ground when she tried to sit on the SV. It may be too high of a bike for someone of your height. Sorry.
You may look at a Yamaha Radian. Its an older, late 80s bike, 600cc, very nice and easy to ride if you can find one thats been well maintained. Its lower and smaller than most newer sport/naked bikes. I had one for a while and loved it until it stopped running.

I would say the SV650 for a # of reasons,,cheaper to maintain(half as many cylinders!)and is a lighter easier to handle bike,,and likely cheaper to insure, the yamaha may be a bit faster, but in my opinion not enough to justify the overall differences,,,I sell Hondas,,,but if were my choice it would be the Suzuki

if this will be your first bike then I would suggest either of them. they are both good bikes. the Yamaha has the R6 engine in it which will be more powerful, the Suzuki would be more of a tamer, just go with the one that you like best. with these two bikes you cant go wrong. which ever one you pick will be a good bike.

He's just trying to sell a bike he's tired of looking at and thinks you're an easy target.Buy the one that makes you smile the most.

Good Luck and be careful.
horray for you !!!!
