Actually, it is tradition. But the start of the tradition was that anyone on the bench and in uniform was eligible to play for the team. In some traveling teams the manager and coaches would play. The last playing manager was Pete Rose. Tommy Lasorda also used a third base coach as a pinch hitter in a game in the 1980's. And there was a rule that only players in uniform were allowed in the dugout. But it is mostly tradition now.

Tradition, mostly, dating back to the early days of professional baseball when the manager was usually also a player. There is also a rule that anyone from a team that goes on the field must be in uniform.

The reason is that in baseball it is a "team" sport. You never see a football coach on the field during the game. Same as basketball and the other sports. The manager has a bigger responability during the game than the other sports.

It's all about tradition... Back in the day, your best player was also your manager. Then they were called player/managers and now they have evolved into two different jobs.
It's kind of sad really because 60 year old guys sure look silly in their uniforms, look closer to pajamas than anything else.

I agree with tradition. The only manager that I can think of never to wear a uniform was Connie Mack, who was not only the manager but also the owner of the Philadelphia Athletics for three decades. He always wore a suit.

Tradition mostly. But also because coaches used to be on the field.. and a lot of them were also players.

That's part of baseball's charm. Like in baseball the "main" coach is called the MANAGER!

You'd have to admit, it'd look weird to see a manager in a suit walking out onto the field to argue a call or kick up some dust and dirty his suit up.

i think it is because of the fact that they can go on the field at any time and they have to be identifiable
