a. An licensed acupuncturist with 4 years of schooling and two years of internship. (This is required in order to get a license)

b. An M.D. with 250 hours (100 through video tapes and the remainder to lectures and practice sessions - this is required in order for an M.D. to practice acupuncture).

(Please explain your opinion! Thanks!)

Obviously depends on the kind of problem you are addressing !!
For the full pulse diagnosis , body system balancing long term kinda treatment I would definitely see the acupuncturist ..
They are the trained experts after all ....
If it was just a simple couple of needles ,first aid sort of thing I would be happy with the M.D.
I have done this for a sinus infection - easier to get into the M.D. and cheaper

No video will tell the MD how deep to push the needle into your skin.

Another consideration is to see how many patients does each of them have. A good acupuncturist will have many patients.

If you're looking for an acupuncture treatment I would go to an acupuncturist. They are trained and specialized . An MD would be new to it all unles they attended a school of acupuncture with hands on classes which take a few years not hours.

No doubt about it, I'd pick A.

TCM is radically different from western medicine in theory, diagnosis and treatment. The 4 year extensive program teaches Acupuncturists the fine points of pulse, tongue, diagnostics, chinese herbs, needle technique, point location, moxa techniques, tui na...the list goes on.

250 hours of training doesn't give you the knowledge to do a damn thing, except possibly destroy any faith or hope your patient might have had about acupuncture when they walked into your office.

As a licensed acupuncturist it frustrates and saddens me that MD's think they can do what I do, with only a fraction of my training and experience.

Rhetorical, my dear Watson :)) How anyone can competently learn the theory and practice of acupuncture in 250 hours, after being exposed only to the flawed premises of mechanistic Western medicine beforehand is a mystery to me :))

When you have eyes problem, you go to eye doctor, when you have brain problem, you go to a neuro, when you want to get acupuncture, seek one that is licensed and know what they are doing WITH INSURANCE.

A M.D. with that amount of hours is like someone trying to relocate your shoulder by reading a book of know how.

That is my opinion.

I can't decide.

A. I believe this person would be more attuned to the way acupunture works and may do a better job.

B. If acupuncture does not work or if there is another medical problem, I like the idea of having only person as my health care provider.

I would personally feel more comfortable with the licensed acupuncturist and would decide based on that.
