Ladies.
What would you think if you receive a drawing for your birthday from one of your closest friends?
I'm a man, and I'm planning to do a drawing from one of her photographs, a realistic one.

Any thoughts on this?

Fabulous, personal and touching. The kind of stuff that you read about in romance novels. If it is a drawing on paper, roll it, tie it with a red silk ribbon and put a red rose under the ribbon. Tell her that you will let her pick out a frame later. Good luck you romantic devil!

As a woman and an artist, I think you might be walking on thin ice here.
A work of art as a present is a lovely thing and I can't think of anything nicer as a gift.
However, most people have a certain image of themselves, and some are very critical of their looks. Even though you are taking your image from a photo, it still might come out differently from her own self image. If you don't portray her as she sees herself or better she may not really like it, or worse yet, she may intensely dislike it.
If this were me, I might be torn between being appreciative and not wanting to hang it.
If this sounds like it might be the case, you can sort of get around it by doing a profile or using a pose where a full face is not involved. Or you can just keep it sketchy with your brushstrokes and color expressing her personality.
On the other hand, if you're wonderfully skilled and if she loves your work or has expressed an interest in having her portrait done, don't listen to me and just go for it!

Ultimate gift that shows thought and care - does not matter if it is a real likeness - the artist will tend to project the traits or features they admire if they care about a person - it will be a most revealing gift - just be prepared for some dialog or emotion or the distinct lack of . This is a very personal thing you are undertaking .

Have a back-up gift otherwise she will think you were trying to be economical, i.e.cheap! It would not matter if you drew her on the Sistine Chapel either make sure you have a decent back-up gift.
