Go to a electrical store where they have a wide range of them. Depending on what u're looking for : physical size of the player, how good it sounds, battery type (chargable or normal AAA batt)... Get the salesman to let u listen to them. Then choose the one u feel that u like best.
People always recommend ipod or other branded ones, but I feel that it's the features and the usage which is more important. Some players are not branded but it suits me best.

Sandisks are fine, but if you want nice sound quality and a really good Microphone and Fm radio, it's got to be Creative zen neeons and up. A hard disk neeon's like around... 150? with 5gb in them. but they have some cons tho. if you want a really good one get a creative. i didn't, but it's what i always regret when i clip on my genius mp3 player.

I believe Scandisk has a nice line of mp3 players that are slim, reliable, and come in sizes that range from 1-4 gigs of memeory.

iPod nano 2 GB. You cant go wrong with its sleek design and nice compatability, i mean its so easy to get songs on there, and the sound is very impressive. Trust me man I have one and it has never given me any problems, and best of all, just charge it when ur computer is on using a USB port i mean how simple is that.
