Well, getting out of bed, walking towards your computer, looking at a bright screen and typing in your question certainly is not the way to turn your brain off.

yes, first do a breathing exercise where you lay flat and count to ten as you relax each part of your body and then go to the next till you get to your feet. then you pic the most serene place you know and let the waves of air or ocean take away as if your floating on it. If that don't work, imagine being in a dark room in your mind and let it relax you.

I had that problem too. There are many solutions. Hold up while I type them.
Dont watch tv to try to fall asleep. As tired as you may feel that actually wakes your brain up.
You can try to think of everything you did that day, woke up, rolled over, got out of bed, put on bunny slippers, walked to door, opened door, etc but that tends to stress me out.
I started counting backwards from 100 until i fell asleep but then i found my mind wondering while i was counting. I also found that i felt the need to finish before i went to sleep.
The best solution that I have found so far is to count to 10 over and over, count backwards from 10 over and over or alternate (1, 2, 3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10, 10,9,8,7,6,5,4,3,2,1,1,2 etc). This works best for me because there is no goal and i cant keep track of how long I am awake for.
Oh, and it also helps that you are not in view of a clock, or u end up counting how many hours, minutes you have left to sleep
