Well, I have a bad habit of bottling my feelings and internalizing them. As a result, I wind up with stress-related illnesses, like shingles. I would reccommend doing a sport. Physical activity helped me get rid of some stress.

You need a simple rule when strong emotions surface. Ask yourself when negative emotions are present - Is this me? If your answer is 'No' you will find yourself toning down or ending the behavior. If you cant control the behavior, just observe the undesired behaviour without judging yourself at that time. So the answer to that question should never be 'yes'(or else you would not have posted the question in the first place).

If strong positive emotions are present, then there is really no problem surely. Just be mindful of expressing affection, when in public places.

The body is resistant to changes. Good or bad. That's called homeostasis. I believe our psychology is the same way too.

I think Ideally they should be experienced, which requires you to let go of yourself. However we're not animals really.

On one extreme you can feel guilt and kind of blame yourself in your thoughts. Too much of this causes lotsa problems too.

If you're that kind of person then you could learn to let yourself go.

If on the other hand you're too impulsive you could SLOWLY change your habits to hit the break if you know what I mean.

On this very good book "Mind OS" Dr.Paul talks about the relationship of anger with assertivity and anxiety with courage

======

The book involves lots of theories. However knowing does not have the same effect as seeing it with your own eyes and neither this one has the effect of experiencing firsthand.

We are slowly filling our minds with stuff. Then suddenly we get it. But what actually happens is that our minds are "prepared".

It's not like Newton discovered gravity all of a sudden when he had an apple fall on his head. His mind was prepared.

So you can "prepare" your mind with unorganized stuff and in time you'll know what to do.

oh well hope it helps

cheers

Try reading books on negative emotions (I wouldn't worry about positive ones :-)), there's a lot of them They will give you insight and understanding what causes them. Once you understand them it is easier to deal with them. Understanding is the key. Buy or borrow Negative Emotions by Dalai Lama.
It is written in co-operation with psychologists doing research on human emotions. Definitely worth reading.
