Fish are born knowing how to swim just like we are born knowing who are mother is. Its a trait that both parents have so its genetically encoded in its blood its brain reacts like its saying hay i am a fish i flap my fins i can get my food or hide from danger. The mother fish just lays the eggs and the father fertilizes them. The mother does not stick around to see her babies. So if for some messed up reason the fish does not know how to swim and its part of a school its considered dead weight and most of the time the fish will eat the weakest links.

Swimming is something they know instinctly. Don't forget that fish are independent creatures and so they know how to stay alive from their birth.

We can't compare the fish to human beings or birds that are so much dependent on their parents.

The magic fish fairy. she spreads her wings and says, 'Fly little fishes' (knowing full well they haven't got a hope - because as we all know, fish don't have wings, they don't drink Red Bull) and as they're thrashing around, they realise that it's much easier to swim. So they do that instead.

I thought everybody knew that.......

Nobody. It's instinct and they've evolved the ability to swim and breathe underwater with gills over millions of years.

If it grew to become into respondant habit then, like us with walking, then fish might have study. yet thet do no longer.

Brian,
If you really want to know, you'll have to ask either God or Mother Nature. We humans don't know everything yet.
