My period is currently 4 months late almost 5. I wasn't too worried until these past few weeks. I have an IUD so normally I can go a month or two without having one but it's never been this long. I have taken numerous HPT's and they have all came back negative. So, I was just wondering if you have an ectopic pregnancy, does it give a positive test result all the time? I haven't been to the doctor yet because my insurance won't kick in until next week. Thank you.

The majority of the time an ectopic pregnancy will still show up on a HPT. You still have the pregnancy hormone if the fetus is in the uterus or not. Besides if you were four months pregnant I believe you would definitely know if the pregnancy was ectopic. Doctors usually know about these pregnancies very early because of the pain they cause and the state of urgency to get them removed. You are probably fine.

An ectopic will show up positive almost all the time, but there is no way you could be 4 months pregnant with an ectopic pregnancy. If the baby was in the tube it would have burst by now and you would have required IMMEDIATE medical treatment due to internal bleeding. It is possible for an ectopic pregnancy to be elsewhere besides the tube but even so you would have known long before due to the pain.

Q: If I have an ectopic pregnancy, will it register on a home pregnancy test?

A: In most cases an ectopic pregnancy will trigger a positive home test result. Ectopic pregnancies still produce hCG, though levels are often lower are double more slowly than in-utero pregnancies.

An ectopic pregnancy would give a normal positive result.
