I am currently in an animal science undergraduate program also hoping to come day get into veterinary school. There are tons of undergraduate schools with pre-vet programs and I highly recommend finding a school with one of them. Or go to a school that offers biology. If you go to www.aavmc.org you will find a list of all schools that offer doctorate programs in veterinary medicine and a list of basic requirements that one would need to get into one of these schools. I'm not sure how much research you have already done about vet schools, but it is very hard to get into vet school. I hear it's harder than getting into medical school or law school. You have to get top grades and plenty of experience with animals. I would recommend starting now with volunteering at zoos or an animal clinic. Grades and experience are the most important things when getting into vet school.

As for scholarships, usually getting good grades is a good starter for ensuring that you will receive some. Volunteering in general, not necessarily with animals can also win over some other scholarship companies. If you go to scholarships.com, you can fill out some personal information and they can usually lead you in the right direction for finding scholarships. Don't just wait for a school to give them to you, also do outside research for them.

Good luck!

In college you want to focus on getting the main courses you'll need before applying to veterinary school - contact the schools for details, but generally you'll need: biology, regular chemistry and organic chemistry, physics, calculus, and physiology. Also try to get some practical hands-on experience with animal care; it doesn't have to be all that intense or technical, but enough to give you some idea of what it's really like.

When it comes time to apply for veterinary school, grades are very important but they're not everything. Your GRE scores, specific course load and animal experience are significant factors as well. Schools are also looking for diversity of background and interests; this is the sort of thing that your essay and interview should bring out.

Compassion for all animals not just the cute ones. Even if you can't stand snakes or bats pretend like you do and try not to flinch when they talk about them or present them.
