Algorithm for digital Beam forming for an acoustic Hydrophone array?

Hi,
I have a need to collect all information ( web site, books) relates to how to write software that perform beam forming for an acoustic Hydrophone that consist of 6 elements. I am familiar with FIR filtering algorithm, but not beam forming. Anybody had done this before can give me some hint, such as name of good books, web sites or white papers on the internet ?

People have overcome poor reception, to get TV signals, using phased Yagi antennas. Digital beam forming just puts a variable delay between signals before summing them.
