It depends what gear you are in. If you are driving a standard, then you are just being silly.
If you are driving an automatic, you are probably not getting to your last gear. A 3-speed (common) automatic will have an L1, L2, D, N, R, P. Make sure you are not inadvertently in L2.
Maybe your shifter is out of whack. You may need to shift to N to really get to D.

This may or may not be normal. If you have a 4.56 rear end ratio or if some reason you have the overdrive switched off.
If none of the above, then we have a problem. Take it in and have the transmission checked.

check your automatic transmition... it is not normal.. usually automatic transmtions tend to keep the car in low rpm. If you have a manual, then maybe you need just to change shifts

May be you having sliding clutch for a manual transmission or have damages of your automatic transmission. May be it's your speedometer is not working properly. Better check up by a mechanic.

Do you have the overdrive off? If you do then your rpms will go up.
