My husband drives my MX6 back and forth to work, and one day after work he came home & said the car was having 'issues' (as noted above). We've had 3 mechanics look at it and even the dealership. We've heard it could be the O2 sensors, it could be the plugs, wires, distributor (we've replaced them all) and its still not quite right. I saw a response to a similar question with a possible answer of a fuel pump...any & all serious input will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

first if it sputters after warm check the cam timing and then the do a pressure test of the cylinders after that put on a vac gauge and warm it up if is a bad valve to gauge will tell you.
have you pulled the codes yet heres a link on how

Warm engine to operating temperature and turn ignition "OFF."
Install jumper wire between TEN and GND terminals of data link connector.
Turn the ignition switch to the ON position.
If MIL illuminates for 3 seconds, goes off, and stays off, no codes are present.
If MIL illuminates, then starts flashing, record codes.
When all codes have been recorded, remove jumper wire.

this is not a rotary its a 2.0 or 2.5 v6
i have a 96 626 with a 2.0 and it sputtered when warm . only when you take off and it was the mass air flow sensor just take it out and a use elegiacal cleaner in the small hole inside. now its a smooth take off maybe that is your problem

spitting sputtering and backfires usually point to timing. the mx6 rotary engine i think has a timing belt not a chain, it could be time for a new one, or adjusted for general wear. if the fuel pump/filter were clogged or acting up, thats no cause for backfire. backfire comes from unused fuel burned after it leaves in the exhaust. so one of the plugs isnt firing which could be timing.
