I have a really close friend on campus who has the exact same problem as you and she hasn't gotten rid of it either; Yet.
There is definitely hope for this so don't worry so much. First of all, when trying to sleep, stop thinking and gettin frustrated about it. It will distract you further. Also, before bedtime, try taking a nice warm shower and have a glass of warm milk too, with maybe some of your fave cookies.. And you could try the other suggestions by the others who answered your query too..
If nothing works, I suggest you see a doctor about it. He might be able to help you or refer you to a psychiatrist if your problem seems to stem from some other issue. I wish you well...

Apart from the old joke about the best cure for insomnia being the realisation that it is time to get up .....
Assuming you area not taking any uppers etc. Also, do not drink any cafeine drinks (including diet coke or other high sugar soft driks) within 4 or 6 hours before sleeping.
Try taking 5 or 6 Calcium tablets (good quality ones, like Usana) about 30 minutes before you go want to sleep. This is actually a good relaxant for sleping, and also in times of stress.

It's still pretty early isn't it?
Isn't it like 10:50 out there?
Look, here's what you do if you want to sleep really fast.
If you're over 21 take a shot of alcohol. Maybe two. That should do the trick.
If you're under 21 take some Nyquil, but first do some excersize.
Then after you're waiting for the Nyquil to kick in, read some really boring book.

A book I read said lot of people suffer insomnia from some sort of nutritional deficiency. Try taking extra vitamins in the morning to supplement what you might be missing from meals and try to cut back on starchy food at night; they can sometimes give extra bursts of energy for short periods of time. If none of that works, try to see a doctor about a mild sleeping pill to help you crash at night. I take a lot of pills to make me sleep and trust me, you don't wanna be where I am. I don't know how much help I've been, considering things but... well, there you go.

try writing in a journal. maybe something is weighing on your mind with out you knowing it. I do this, write about a page about your day, people who you saw that day, and what may have happenedto keep you awak. Try drinking a glass of milk, or close your eyes and think of a pieceful place, or think what you could do with a million dollars. Or what ever you like or want. Before you know it you will be seeing the zzzzzzzz's. This works for me, kind of weird but it works. good luck

dont watch television or computer right before going to bed, the light confuses your brain into thinking its daytime. try exercising a little it'll tire you out and let you sleep. Something like yoga or pilates, stretching or jogging in place but nothing too vigorous because it makes you more active and awake. good luck.
ps. taking a warm bath is good too, helps u relax.

I chug a big cup of coffee and wait a half hour for the rush to drop. Then I fall right to sleep. If you have melatonin, it works great (3-5 mg)
