Well, since Alaska is a HUGE state, it really depends on where you move. I have lived all over Southeast Alaska: Ketchikan, Petersburg, and some really small towns too.
Southeast is a series of Islands, so you're pretty isolated. When I was a kid we only got fresh fruit and vegetables once a week in the summer. Things have changed a lot since then, but it's still a different life style. The only way to get from place to place is by airplane or boat both of which are expensive.
The sense of community is so amazing though, I love it. Just last week a co-worker saw my son walking down the street with my brother-in-law (that doesn't live here) and she called to make sure he was okay. People look out for each other in Alaska and are always willing to lend a helping hand!
It's so beautiful here that even when it's raining and blowing I feel like I live in a postcard. Where else can you watch whales playing while sitting in your office working?
The winters are pretty dark, damp, and can feel pretty long...but it's all worth it when the summer finally arrives. We may not having giant shopping malls and fancy restaurants, but the great outdoors is all ours.
I would highly recommend living in Alaska. I moved to California for 5 years and couldn't wait to come back home. The life here is really unique and absolutely amazing!

I live in Wasilla Alaska, We are here because my husband got stationed at Elmendorf. We do not enjoy it here and hope to move ASAP, we have been here almost 2 years. It is not what we have pictured in our minds of Alaska. The Mat-su Valley , where we live has approximately 80,000 people. The city of Anchorage, approx.40 miles away has 270,000. It is the most CITY life we have ever experienced. Alot of crime and drugs.
My husband wanted to move here for the hunting, but has only hunted 4 days. Seems like a big ordeal to hunt here...need a few $thousand, for pilots etc. We are used to just going in our back yard and hunting (Idaho). There are no Elk or Deer and the only wildlife we have seen is Moose and Bald Eagles. Most of the trees are leaf trees, and I figure they most import the trees for any cabins.
I also find it strange that you can have up to 4 ounces of marijuana, but can not buy a lottery ticket!
The fishing, however, Is great.
Winter is long, long long, daylight of about 4 hours in winter,,,and 20 hours in the summer.
Last summer all it did was rain, and the high got up to maybe 70.
I think Alaska,,is a great place to visit, but not to live.

It is not much different than anywhere else in the Northern climbs. Winter can be long, but it is beautiful with the Northern Lights and such.
Summers are phenomenal. Long hours of daylight (19- 20 hrs on average), and the fishing is unbeatable.
Plenty of elbow room for everyone.
The mountains, too many to count, along with lakes, rivers, streams, the list just never stops.
You literally have to see it to believe it.
