#1 Rod Laver only male player to win 2 Gran Slams. Note from 1963 till 1967 he was forbidden (he was a pro) from playing in the Australian, French, Wimbledon, the US Grand Slams untill the Open era of 1968. Leading tennis authorities say he was the best in this era and never could demonstrate just how dominate he was, because of the rules allowing only amateurs from playing in the slams.

#2 Roger Federer keeps climbing up the ladder, but still needs to win the French Open. Needs a Grand Slam

#3 Roy Emerson yes he benefited from a weakened field, but he still won the career grand slam winning on all surfaces. 12 slams overall

#4 Pete Sampras 7 Wimbledon's 5 U.S. Opens. (2 Australian) Never won the French

#5 Bjorn Borg retired way before his time 6 French and 5 Wimbledon's. Really needed to win a U.S. Open.

*Conners really had the bulk of his success in one tournament the U.S. Open accounting for 5 of his 8 slams (never won the French)

*Lendl never won Wimbledon so he can't be above Conners.

* Agassi okay he won the career grand slam, but head to head Pete Sampras 3 Agassi 0 when it mattered most Grand Slam Finals. Besides he never dominated over a long period had flashes of brilliance.

Jimmy Conners, Borg, Pete Sampras, Ivan Lendl, Federer.

Those are the ones who come to mind right off the top of my head. I'm sure I've missed some greats, but, all of the above are right up there.

In no order, but I think to make it easier and fair, this kind of thing has to be best by era:

Rod Laver
Pete Sampras
Bjorn Borg
Jimmy Connors
Roger Federer - he's not retired but with what he's done so far, he has to be included.

I think Samprus is the best ever for now. I think when everything is said and done Federer will be the best.
