One of my friends moved to Texas last year, and just heard about this law. Apparrently, she said that if a member of the opposite sex introduces you at least three times as their husband or wife, they become legally married.

Have you ever heard of this? Is this an actual law?

Thanks!

I'm trying soooo hard not to laugh. Honey, this is an old southern joke, not a law by any stretch of the imagination. People started saying this decades ago because of all the inbreeding that went on in the south. I believe that the next line that goes after this is "If she's not good enough for her own brothers, she's not good enough for you".

Please do not take this serious. It is definately not a law.

I have lived in Texas 22 years and I have NEVER heard of a 3 introduction law. My understanding is that to have a common law marriage in Texas, you must DO three things:

(1) have an agreement to be married
(2) hold yourself out to a third party as being married, and
(3) live together

Notice the "and" portion...meaning you have to both agree that you are "married"...a simple introduction by one party wont don't it...even if it IS done three times.

It would be really wise to consult a lawyer, it is possible that was all that was required to be a common law spouse in Texas. However, laws change all the time so one should be very careful about taking such things to heart without consulting an attorney.
