Phoenix is usually 602.
The west valley, like the cities Glendale, Surprise, Sun City, and Peoria are usually 623.
And the east valley, like Scottsdale, Tempe, Mesa, and Chandler are usually 480.
This isn't always true though. My parents live in Glendale and their area code is 602, but, right accross the street from them the area code is 623.

The Phoenix area embraces a number of cities that are pretty much divided only by streets and we use the following area codes: 602 - for Phoenix the city itself 623 - For cities like: Anthem, Glendale, Peoria 480 - For cities like: Chandler, Scottsdale, Gilbert, Mesa & Tempe

Phoenix is mostly 602 or 623, and also 480. I actually work in Phoenix with a work number of 480. Tucson and much of southern Arizona is 520.

602 for central phoenix.
623 for the west and some of the north valley-glendale, peoria, Surprise, El Mirage, Goodyear, Avondale, Anthem
480 for the east.- Gilbert, Mesa, Scottsdale, Chandler.
