how to check if your alternator is damaged?

Use the poor boys checker. Take a long screwdriver or hacksaw blade and hold it over the center of the alternator, about 1 to 1 1/2 inches. If the alternator if working the screwdriver or blade will be drawn to it like a magnet is pulling it, of course the engine has to be running. This will only tell you it is working, not if it is putting out the proper amount of current. You can have it checked at Auto Zone and some other auto parts stores.

Drive the car to your local parts store. They can test the charging system without removing anything.
